Teacher teaching workshops
Topic: Enhancing Student Learning Outcomes; Understanding and Application of the Forgetting Curve
To enhance students' academic performance and memory, and to promote the teaching resources of the Global Chinese Language Network, the Australian Oriental Culture School held a teacher workshop on the morning of January 11, 2025, at Chatswood RSL. Before the start of the new academic year and semester, teachers not only learned about the concept and application of the forgetting curve, but also gained a deeper understanding of how the Global Chinese Language Network's resources can assist in teaching. The workshop was a success, and the teachers benefited greatly.
The event was hosted by Principal Chien Ming-hui, with enthusiastic participation from teachers who engaged in in-depth discussions on how to improve teaching effectiveness and student learning outcomes. The core theme of the workshop revolved around the "forgetting curve" theory, a memory theory proposed by German psychologist Ebbinghaus. Principal Chien Ming-hui provided a detailed explanation of the key elements of the forgetting curve, emphasizing that scientific and diversified review strategies are not only crucial for slowing down forgetting but also for improving student learning efficiency. During the event, teachers also shared and discussed how to select topics that interest students, how to stimulate curiosity and improve learning performance through engaging teaching methods, and how to effectively plan review activities. The principal encouraged teachers to apply these theories to their instructional design in order to improve students’ learning outcomes.
Furthermore, Jian Minghui emphasized the importance of consistent teaching materials and formats for learning and memorization, as highlighted in the literature. The literature indicates that consistent textbooks and layouts reduce the difficulties students face adapting to due to the diversity of books and frequent format changes. The workshop stressed the importance of utilizing the rich teaching materials available on the Global Chinese Language Network to design engaging and interactive courses, thereby enhancing students' learning interest.
This teacher workshop provided a platform for in-depth exchange and learning for teachers at the Australian Oriental Culture School. It not only allowed teachers to understand the application value of memory science in teaching but also promoted the sharing and collaboration of teaching resources within the school. Principal Jian Minghui stated that the school will continue to hold similar workshops in the future and introduce more teaching innovations and resources, striving to improve students' learning performance and cultural literacy. The teachers expressed that this workshop gave them a deeper understanding of forgetting curve theory and inspired new teaching ideas. They look forward to witnessing more student progress and growth in the new school year.
